Lillehammer was the site of the 1994 Winter Olympic Games. The town got a lot of press and TV coverage. Lost, however, was the fact that the downhill ski and snowboard slopes are not located in or even near the small city. Lillehammer served as the base for the Olympics and the media focus, but for Alpine skiing or riding, a car or bus ride is necessary to get to the distant slopes. The two resorts, Hafjell and Kvitfjell (fjell means mountain), are outside of Lillehammer. Hafjell is about a 20-minute trip and Kvitfjell is around 45 minutes from Lillehammer. Though the downhill facilities are not right in Lillehammer, combining these two resorts means the region has 40 lifts, 80 downhill runs. Plus there are more than 1,500 km. of cross-country trails around Lillehammer, across the top of Hafjell and through the woods bordering Kvitfjell. These trails never end. Intrepid cross-country skiers can head over to the North Sea or back to Oslo. The Hafjell lift system includes two high-speed quad chairlifts, a fixed grip quad chair and T-bars. The majority of the trails can be reached by sticking to the high-speed lifts. The strengths of the area are the magnificent panoramas, excellent grooming and the ability of skiers of all abilities to ski together for most of the day with easy bypasses around the steeps.Experts will not find the area very challenging. The black runs have pitch but are very wide and well-groomed - perfect for intermediates progressing to advanced. Intermediates will have a mountain where they can ski and snowboard themselves giddy. The wide trails through deep green forests provide the ideal pitch to perfect a carved turn. These trails keep an intermediate skier feeling at the top of their game.Beginners have long meandering trails that loop down the mountain from the topmost lift providing a top-of-the-mountain experience most novices don't get. There is also a separate beginner and first-timer area to the left of the main lift.
